Toddler Vest to Toddler Hat - Refashion
A couple of months ago I saw the cutest cardigan hat by Disney from Ruffles and Stuff. I decided to give it a shot using this adorable toddler vest which my toddler recently outgrew.
If you head on over to Disney's blog under the tutorials section you'll find instructions to make a child's cardigan hat using an adult size sweater. Since I'm using a child's vest I had to tweak the instructions a bit. So here's how I did it:
I found a hat from which to base my measurements.
Next, I cut the bottom portion of the vest. I saved this piece for later use.
I then measured the length of the vest, 8 inches, and using a compass I drew a circle on the vest with a diameter of 8 inches.
I cut the side seam open.
I cut out the circle.
I then fit the circle into the hat so I could decide how much more fabric I would need to make a proper fitting hat. I figured adding about 2 inches all around would be good. I had to calculate how long to make the pieces. I used the formula for calculating circumference(pi x diameter), 3.14 x 8. So I cut 2 strips down the opposite side, 2" x 9" and 2" x 7.
I then sewed the pieces right sides together to form a circle. I used a zigzag stitch and a 1/4" seam allowance.
I pinned this piece to the circle and attached using a zigzag stitch, 1/4" seam allowance.
Next, I used the left over hem piece and added a gathering stitch to the hat. I then gathered the hat so it would fit into the hem.
I folded the hem in half and pinned it to the hat.
The last step, using a zigzag stitch I attached the hem to the hat.
That's it!! My little model was sleeping so no pictures of her wearing it. I'll try to update this post later today with some pictures of her modeling her new hat.
Please share your thoughts/questions. I really enjoy reading all comments. Thanks!
