Star Wars/Hello Kitty Dress - Tutorial
It just so happens that I live in a house full of either princess toys and dolls or Star Wars toys and comic books. The past few months we've spent our Saturdays at Ballet, Tap,and Hip Hop Classes for Izzy. Poor X hasn't participated in any activities so it was decided that we would attend this year's Comic Con (Comic Book Convention in San Diego). My girls like to have an outfit for every occasion, so I spent some time searching the net for inspiration and found the funniest Hello Kitty/Star Wars mash-up ever. I decided to use this as my theme. So here is how I made Lizzy's new favorite Hello Kitty Storm Trooper dress.
First I'm going to jot down a few instructions for making a simple felt applique. So grab some an old T shirt, freezer paper, Heat n' Bond, and felt. You can use a coloring book page for the applique or come up with your own design.
Step 1: Trace the image onto a piece of freezer paper (the smooth side). I had to trace an outline, the Storm Trooper, the eyes, mouth, etc. all separately.

The outline will be in black.

Most of these pieces will be white
Step 2: Cut the Storm Trooper parts so that they can be ironed onto the felt, adhesive side should be facing the felt when you iron (follow the instructions on the Heat n' Bond package). Cut each individual piece. The more detailed your picture the more cutting you'll have to do.
Step 3: Iron the outline onto the T shirt. I was afraid the felt would melt so I placed a piece of scrap cotton fabric over the outline while I iron it.
Step 4: Sew the outline to the shirt to strength the bond.
Step 5: Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining parts.
Now that the applique is complete you can get started on adding the skirt.
Step 1: Measure the width of the bottom of the shirt.

My shirt measures almost 11 inches.
Step 2: Multiply the width by 4, this will be your new width. Measure how long you want the skirt to be. I measured from Lizzy's waist to right above her knee, 9 inches and added 1" for seam allowances. Based on my calculations my skirt piece will be 10 x 44.

My skirt is folded selvage to selvage.
Step 3: Sew the sides right sides together and serge or zigzag stitch the edges. The skirt should now form a circle. I also went ahead and serged the top and bottom of the skirt.
Step 4: Press the bottom of the skirt to form a 1/2" hem.
Step 5: Sew the bottom hem.
Step 6: Sew a gathering stitch to the top of the skirt.
Step 7: Gather and pin the skirt to the bottom of your shirt.
Step 8: Sew the skirt to the top using a 1/2" seam allowance. Don't forget to topstitch.
That's it! Please let me know your thoughts.

Hi Anna,
The picture came from Photobucket.com - find stuff - Hello Kitty Star Wars. Once I saw it I knew it was perfect!
I LOVE this! I have this sticker on the back of my car since I wanted something to represent my household and it was perfect! I am going to have to make one of these for my daughter!! I would have never thought to use felt!
This is so cute! I tried to make this dress for my daughter but everytime I went to pin the skirt to the shirt it was inside out...Help!!! Did you pin it wrong side to right side?
Hi. I pinned it right sides together. Hope this helps.
