Pants to Girls Bubble Shorts - Refashion Tutorial
I've seen these cute little bubble shorts all over the place for the upcoming summer season. I thought I'd try making a pair for Izzy out of another one of X's outgrown pants (look for more boy to girl clothing refashions this month). I think they came out super cute and Izzy loves them! Here's how I did it:
Find a pair of old pants that have some room in the thigh area. You'll need excess fabric so it will gather well and give it the bubble effect. I selected a pair of gray cord pants.
Once I tried them on Izzy I wasn't happy with the fit so I had to make an extra alteration. I decided to shortened the front length of the crotch area by about 2 inches and leave the back alone (this is optional). I also decided on the length of the shorts and added 3/4" for the hem.
I cut the length for the shorts and cut open the inside seam to alter the crotch length. I made sure to leave a 1/2" seam allowance. I pinned the front to the back together (optional step).
I sewed the crotch area and zigzag stitched the seam (optional step).
Take 2 excess pieces of fabric to make the hem for each leg. I measured Izzy's thigh and added 2 inches, 1 inch for the seam allowance and 1 inch for leg room. I made the hem pieces 2" x 12". Sew each piece right sides together and press open the seams.
Sew a gathering/basting stitch around each leg cuff. Gather and pin the cuff to the hem piece. Stitch and press the hem piece back.
At this point I nearly forgot to finish the bottom of the hem piece, so I quickly zigzag stitched the bottom. Stitch the hems. That's it!
I'd love to get any feedback on this refashion! Thanks!
