Boy Pants to Girly Skirt - Tutorial
I've had a pair of outgrown size 6 boy corduroy pants lying around. Last night I finally decided to do something with them. I tried them on Izzy and they fit around her waist (hooray for adjustable waist pants). Here's how I transformed a pair of X's pants into an Izzy approved size 6 skirt.
Step 1: Cut the pant legs.
Step 2: Cut the pant legs open at the seams.
Step 3: Cut the thick seams/hems.
Step 4: Cut four pieces 5" x 13.5". Once sewn together this will be twice as wide as the width of the bottom of the skirt.
Step 5: Sew the four pieces together so that you have one long strip. Make sure to either serge or zigzag stitch the hems. Serge or zigzag stitch the bottom edge. Sew the strip to form a circle.
Step 6: Press the bottom 1/2" and stitch the hem.
Step 7: Using a 1/4" seam allowance sew a gathering stitch.
Step 8: Gather and pin bottom to skirt. Sew together using a 1/2" seam allowance.
Step 9: Press the seam up.
Step 10: Topstitch.
That's it! Please let me know what you think.

About Me
- Rachel
- Hello, I’m Rachel. I started sewing 9 months ago and fell in love with putting together unique clothes for my children to wear. Although I’ve focused mainly on clothes I’m trying to branch out into other crafts. This blog gives a peek into my current projects. Please feel to leave comments or email me questions or ideas at rachel@sewambitious.com. Thanks for visiting!

this is a great idea! i'm going to give it a try just as soon as my son outgrows some trousers!
What a great way to make a sweet little skirt! Hugs, Cindy S

Great minds must think alike. I've been doing the same thing at my house. So fun!
Great job! I made a similar looking skirt, but used a slightly different method. I love how yours looks!

This is a great idea to stretch your wardrobe! Love the little flounce at the hem :)
Great Idea! The skirt looks great.
Wow - you did a fabulous job. I keep meaning to try the pants to skirt thing -- you're an inspiration!
Super cute idea. It seems my boys always wear out the knees. This may give their pants a 2nd life.
Love this. Now I have a good way to use all those boy pant hand-mew-downs my little girl will inherit from having 2 brothers. Thanks for linking it up to Craftastic Monday!
That is super pretty!! Great way to reuse pants!

Very, very cute!
It turned out so well!
I have a weekly Thursday blog party especially for people to share things they've made to be worn. Stop by if you'd like!
That's such a great idea, thanks!
My daughter ist so thin that her pants get too short but still fit around her waist. And since she loves skirts I'll definitely try this.
Greetings from Germany,

GENIUS!! What a GREAT idea!
Thanks for sharing and linking up to I'm Lovin'It! Have a FABULOUS weekend!
if only it was this easy to style boy clothes :)
Wow! What a super idea!
Wow! great idea. I think will turn all pants of my 10 years old boy to those cute skirts :D
This will be so funny...
Greetings from Alaska!
You’re brilliant. This is a great idea for the pants my kids wear the knees out of. I usually send hand-me-downs to my nieces and nephews and get discouraged when they have holes or stains I can’t remove. The ideas are churning now. I could make skirts or even capris with little ruffles. I look forward to seeing more of your amazing creations.:)
Only sewing for 9 months and doing projects like this--I'm impressed!
this is such an awesome idea, I think it would look great if you mixed up the fabrics too.
That is so cute! I'll have to try that! Thanks for sharing!
Excellent tutorial! Your skirt turned out really cute! I've been meaning to make one like this for a while, but so many projects and so little time :-)
Well done! That looks great! Thanks for sharing ... I've posted a link.
This is suck a great way to turn those unwanted pants into something fabulous for summer! I would love to try this on a pair of khakis I found this morning that have been hiding in my dresser!
